Snorkling i Mahahual

Outside of the calm fishing village of Mahahual runs the great Meso American Reef, the second largest in the world (after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia) that goes all the way from Puerto Morelos in Mexico to Honduras. It is over 900 kilometers long and offers a variety of under water life to be explored. Since Fran doesn't have a cetrificate to dive we went snorkeling (money might have something to do with it as well) but I am very certain a diving experience would be MUCH better. We save that for our next trip to Mexico, where we will hopefully have a little more funds. But our experience was still great, even though the turtles didn't hear me calling for them.
The reef is - just like everything that is beautiful - fairly ruined by (guess who) us destructive humans and stands at risk. Only touching one of the corals with human fingers leads to it dying because of the bacteria on our hands. That is a good metafor for our way to not being able to enjoy anything without touching it (am I being very hateful?). So snorkeling and diving here also means a big responsability.

Another factor - perhaps not equally as important but still rather vital for your experience - is the equipment. All the companies charge pretty much the same, but the quality varies. Therefor it's good to check these stuff before buying anything. We went out with a boat without thinking about that and ended up with snorkels that might as well have been straws. It was cheap trash and every thirty seconds it started sounding as if we had smoked for a hundred years, and we had to go up and empty the snorkel.

Thumbs up. Chau.
