Shades of Playa del Carmen

After five days in Playa del Carmen we are all settled in with apartment and gym cards. We have half a friend (you know the "we should grab a beer sometime-phase of the relationship") and a pet cricket - Pedro - that ran away (for the better really because pets are not permitted in our building). We are starting to get to know the town, little by little, and love it more each day.

Playa del Carmen is mainly (pretty much a 99.9%) about the tourism. It is all built around the beach where the big hotels line up like castles, always trying to beat the next one. That's the fancy, really nice part of Playa. Then, the further away from that you get, the more you get into the less nicer parts. In that way, Playa - like many other tourist places - is a town of shades. And I have tried to capture that.

At the moment the Yucatán peninsula (as well as the rest of the Carribean) is in it's rainy period, also called the tornado season. Yes, they do get tornados here, but it's rare. We have the mornings with steaming sun and the afternoons with thunderstorm and a rain like only a Hollywood movie could have. That makes the place fairly calm, but only for a few weeks more. Then comes the tourist boom and that brings work. They have told us that finding employment at the moment can be difficult, but that only in 15 days all the restaurants and bars will start employing. So we are going to enjoy our last days of freedom, see the tourist attractions near by and then get down to business. There can only be one problem, it appears. If you are born without a vagina and therefor can't wipe floors or work in the cashier. Unluckily for Fran, he doesn't have one.
Anyways, here is my collage of the "Shades of Playa del Carmen" project, starting with número uno. The beach:
The beach of Playa del Carmen contains everything from rich tourists, fancy hotels and excursions to hard working fishermen and teenage boys on too many party pills. You get the wealthy mexican guy who plays techno so loud everybody hates him. The russians drinking beer. The hippies playing drums and the guys in the shade selling cocain. So, is Playa a place for everyone? Not so sure. But I love it.

Next time, before I start digging deeper into this town, I will show you our apartment of course and tell you all about that. Until then <3
